Overview

What are the characteristics of the Scotch VHB GPH?

The GPH adhesive tape is part of the VHB (Very High Bond) range, with GPH standing for General Purpose High Temperature.

As the name suggests, it combines both high-temperature resistance and versatility, creating numerous bonding possibilities across a wide range of materials, whether similar or different.

It is a closed-cell grey foam made entirely of acrylic adhesive mass, with a red film liner, and is available in three thicknesses:

    • GPH 060: 0.60 mm

    • GPH 110: 1.10 mm

    • GPH 160: 1.60 mm

          What are its applications?

Due to its versatility, the applications are numerous and varied, for both indoor and outdoor uses:

    • Fixing stiffeners and panel reinforcements

    • Bonding glass front panels on casings

    • Window or door assembly

    • Attaching signage: nameplates, logos

    • Mounting panels on frames

    • Decorative materials

    • Bonding powder-coated materials before they enter the oven

    • And more...

          Product features and customer benefits

What distinguishes a classic VHB tape from the VHB GPH next-generation version?

    1. Heat resistance: withstands temperatures up to 230°C for short durations.

    2. Lower cost for equivalent performance in certain applications. Productivity is improved and manufacturing costs are reduced.

    3. The high-temperature resistance (150°C continuous, 230°C peak) is essential in many industries (metalworking, special vehicles, appliances, etc.). The VHB GPH adhesive tape provides a strong and reliable bond, even in applications involving powder coating, where an oven cure is required (like 3M 4611).

Its initial adhesion (also known as tack or “quick stick”) is high, allowing for fast handling. Wait 24 hours after application before subjecting the bond to stress, allowing the acrylic foam to reach its optimal bonding properties.

    Other advantages of 3M VHB:

    • Conformability

The tape can achieve up to 300% deformation, after which the foam returns to its original shape without losing appearance or performance! This conformability enables bonding to both rigid and irregular surfaces, compensating for flatness variations up to one-third of its thickness.

    • Wide range of substrate adhesion

The tape bonds well to many high and medium surface energy materials:

    • Metals: aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel

    • Composites

    • Plastics: polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)

    • Painted or treated wood

    • Rigid PVC

    • Glass

It is a highly versatile adhesive tape, comparable to 3M VHB 4941 in terms of performance. It can bond materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion but is not recommended for low-energy surfaces like PE, PP, or PTFE.

    • High dynamic stress absorption

Its viscoelasticity allows it to absorb shear, peel forces, shocks, and vibrations effectively. Stress is distributed over the entire adhesive surface, significantly increasing the bond’s durability.

With rivets or welds, stress is concentrated at the fastening points, but VHB tape distributes stress evenly.

    • Sealing

The acrylic foam creates a permanent, waterproof seal against external elements such as water and moisture.

    • Aesthetic

The final assembly is invisible: no screws, nails, rivets, or welds are visible, which opens the door to creative design with guaranteed strong, long-lasting adhesion.

    • Customizable cutting

The foam can be cut into custom shapes and sizes for tailored applications. This encourages greater freedom in the final assembly’s design.

          Usage and application

For optimal performance, it is essential to clean and prepare the surface before application. We recommend using isopropyl alcohol (in liquid form or wipes) to ensure the surface is free of dust or grease.

Once the GPH tape is applied, pressure between 1 to 2 kg/cm² is required. After removing the liner, the assembly is completed, followed by a second application of pressure to ensure perfect adhesion across the surface.

We also offer a manual dispenser designed for clean application and consistent pressure.
