Description of 3M YR 500
3M YR500 is a single-sided technical tape with a green color, produced by 3M, composed of:
a rubber backing
a brown silicone paper liner
an acrylic adhesive
Its primary application is for surface protection and as a masking tape during sandblasting or grit blasting operations. The surface to be protected is covered with 3M YR 500 tape, while the unprotected area is blasted with an abrasive material (referred to as media) at high speed using compressed air through a nozzle.
What are its applications?
The primary use of 3M YR500 is in masking during sandblasting or grit blasting.
Masking to protect surfaces from abrasive projections during sandblasting
Protection of certain parts of aircraft during mechanical paint stripping
Creating stencil patterns for wooden or glass signs, engraving shapes, and sandblasting wooden or glass panels
It is commonly used in aerospace industries or by companies specializing in sandblasting or grit blasting.
Product features and client benefits
The rubber backing of the 3M YR500 is easy to cut, and the liner removal is simple. Users can cut various shapes, such as small letters or characters for stencil designs.
It has excellent abrasion resistance, stretchability, and torsional strength, making it resistant to abrasive blasting media such as aluminum oxide, steel shot, ceramic beads, or corundum, and is highly conformable.
Its pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive provides excellent adhesion to smooth surfaces. However, it is crucial to ensure edge adhesion to prevent foreign particles from infiltrating the protected surface.
Refer to our website for detailed steps to optimize tape adhesion during surface preparation.
The tape removes cleanly from most surfaces, leaves no residue, and is highly visible during removal due to its green color.
The difference between sandblasting and grit blasting lies in the type of media used and the pressure applied. Sandblasting removes superficial layers and creates a rough surface for paint adhesion. Grit blasting is more forceful, creating a more substantial surface texture with cast iron shot.
It's recommended to conduct preliminary tests to select the right masking tape depending on thickness and surface type.
For sandblasting, the ADEZIF TO 160 cloth adhesive tape with a 0.33 mm thickness is suitable.
The 3M 500 YR with a 0.8 mm thickness is ideal for sandblasting and can be used for grit blasting with prior testing.
The ADEZIF MO500 rubber-backed tape is the thickest at 1.14 mm and works for both sandblasting and grit blasting.
