Characteristics of the 3M 398FR
The 3M 398FR is a glass cloth tape, classified as a "technical" tape from 3M’s Scotch range.
Its main feature is that it is flame retardant and non-flammable, according to various standards:
FAR 25853(a) and FAR 25855(d) (Federal Aviation Regulations)
Approved by Boeing: BMS 5-146 Type 1, Class 1, Grade A
Compliant with the latest EU specifications on toxic smoke emissions 2003/11/EC
These certifications make it widely used in the aerospace industry.
It contains no antimony, which, although known for its flame-retardant properties, is toxic to humans.
The glass cloth backing offers high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and tear resistance. It is among the most durable backings.
The acrylic adhesive has a high tack and excellent aging properties, providing long-lasting performance. It can withstand temperatures ranging from -29°C to 121°C.
Conformable, it is suitable for textured, curved, or irregular surfaces.
Applications
This product is widely used in the aerospace industry:
Sealing and joining of thermal and acoustic insulation panels where strong adhesion and flame retardancy are required. Often used in aircraft cargo holds.
Sealing of windows, ducts, and seat repairs in aircraft.
Reinforcement and protection of pipe joints and air ducts (both hot and cold).
Protection of electrical cables exposed to extreme temperatures and wear.
