Description of the 3M 540 sealant
The 3M 540 sealant is a single-component polyurethane sealant from the Powerline range of 3M. It is classified as a "medium module" product because it allows for sealing and bonding in a single operation:
- Sealing against fluids, gases, and dust on various substrates with good resistance to salt spray. It also absorbs noise and vibrations.
- Bonding different materials (such as plastic to metal) that experience low mechanical stress, often coupled with a mechanical fastening system.
With good resistance to UV and aging, it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It can be applied to various substrates including wood, composite, metals (steel, aluminum), fiberglass, ABS, PVC, and concrete/stone, without necessarily requiring a primer.
This flexible product is used, among others, by manufacturers of specialized vehicles.
The 3M 540 sealant is easy to extrude and can be painted after skin formation. It complies with the specifications of ASTM C920, which is specific to sealants, as well as fire/smoke standards such as IMO, ASTM E 162, and ASTM E 662.
