Description of 3M K500 primer
The 3M K500 primer is an adhesion promoter developed by 3M specifically designed to improve the adhesion of adhesive tapes (such as acrylic foam tapes or VHB) on polypropylene (PP), EPDM (synthetic rubber), chlorinated rubber, and ABS.
By applying the K500 primer beforehand, assemblies on these difficult-to-bond surfaces will become more durable.
Applications
The 3M K500 primer is widely used in the automotive sector, particularly to enhance the adhesion of cellular or compact EPDM seals found in various locations within a vehicle, as shown in the photos below:
It is also applicable in any situation where initial adhesion must be significantly increased to promote the strength of the final assembly, especially on surfaces with low energy.
Product features and customer benefits
The 3M K500 primer reacts with ambient humidity and dries quickly within minutes. After approximately 10 minutes, the adhesive can be applied, provided the primer has not been contaminated with dirt. It can be applied using a dosing pen, specific applicator gun, or roller.
Its formulation is specifically designed for significantly improving adhesion on difficult-to-bond surfaces such as EPDM seals and PP, thus enhancing the strength of the final assembly. Preliminary testing will help validate the process.
Before use, we recommend referring to the safety data sheet (SDS) for all information regarding user safety and toxicology.
The K500 primer must be shaken well before use, as it contains microbeads that act as drying agents. It is advisable to take only the desired amount from the bottle and immediately close it tightly, as rapid hardening can be promoted by ambient humidity. The opacity of the liquid is an indicator of its hardening; if it becomes very opaque, it is no longer usable.
After cleaning the surface with an isopropyl alcohol solution, the application of the primer requires only a thin layer, without excess. As mentioned, it is best to let it sit for about ten minutes before applying the adhesive.
