Description of 3M 94 primer
The 3M 94 primer is an adhesion promoter developed by 3M that enhances adhesion on difficult-to-bond surfaces such as PE, PP, ABS plastics, PET/PBT blends, and painted metals covered with powder coatings.
It also strengthens adhesion on surfaces like concrete, mortar, PVC, melamine, wood, glass, and metals.
Its role is to create a new surface allowing the adhesive to "stick" (hence the name adhesion promoter), ensuring a durable and permanent assembly.
The initial adhesion is significantly improved, allowing adhesives to bond to surfaces:
with low surface energy
containing additives that hinder adhesion: it can form a layer preventing the migration of these additives present in the substrate.
It's important to emphasize that 3M 94 primer remains an interface and must withstand the same specifications as the adhesive solution; otherwise, adhesive failure may occur.
What are its applications?
The 3M 94 primer is highly versatile due to the variety of substrates it can be applied to. However, preliminary testing is advised to validate the application.
It is used for all applications where enhancing initial adhesion is necessary.
The automotive sector frequently uses it, for example, to improve the grip of carbon vinyl films in hard-to-reach areas of vehicles: it enables vehicle wrapping by securely bonding delicate parts.
The applicator bulb allows it to be applied to certain delicate areas of vehicles, as shown in the photo below:
How to apply it?
The 3M 94 primer can be applied using a brush, roller, applicator gun, or dosing pen. Be sure to consult the safety data sheet for any necessary precautions.
For porous surfaces, we recommend applying it twice for better coverage (ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second).
Steps to follow:
- Shake the primer well before application.
- Only transfer a small amount into a separate container (except when using the dosing pen).
- Apply a thin layer to the surface to be bonded after cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol, for example.
- Allow to dry before applying the adhesive for about 5 minutes: once dry, the primer is invisible.
- Store the original container tightly closed to avoid solvent evaporation.
For reference, 3M has introduced another less harmful yet equally effective primer available under the reference 3M Universal UV Primer.
