      General description of reinforced adhesive

There are two main ranges of reinforced adhesive tape :

• Bi-directional filament tape

Made of a clear polypropylene backing material, it is reinforced with fibreglass threads width wise and lengthwise to create a mesh, a grid that gives it high mechanical tensile strength both width wise and lengthwise. It cannot be torn by hand and requires the use of a dispenser with a specific blade.

• General purpose filament tape

Also composed of clear polypropylene backing material, it is reinforced with fibreglass threads only lengthwise. Therefore, unlike the bi-directional filament tape, it does not have a fibreglass mesh. However, it still had high mechanical tensile strength and resistance to elongation. It is less prevalent in industry than the bi-directional filament tape.

      The main uses of bi-directional filament tape

Reinforced filament tape and bi-directional filament tape are widely used in industry.

Here are the main applications :

• Strapping
• Closing steel reels or coil strapping of heavy pallets 
• Safety during transportation
• Palletizing (replaces textile strapping)
• Closing heavy cardboard boxes
• Product maintenance

For all these applications, the main references have polypropylene (pp) backing material with rubber adhesive or acrylic adhesive. Among our products, we have economical references but also technical products developed by our manufacturers that offer :

The thickness of the product (backing material + adhesive) varies depending on the technical features from 100 µm to 350 µm. We custom die-cut and sell these products in small quantities and also for manufacturers that use a large volume.

      Some tips for choosing your reinforced adhesive tape

• For applications that require high mechanical resistance, use a wider die-cut tape to increase resistance.
• If you are looking for an inexpensive or economical reinforced adhesive, the bi-directional filament tape is more prevalent and more economical for industrial customers than general purpose filament tape; it is available, for example, under the scotch reference 3M 8959.
• For easy use, there are manual table dispensers, hand dispensers and automatic dispensers used for reinforced tape.
