What are the characteristics of Loctite HY 4080 GY adhesive?
The Loctite HY 4080 GY (also known as Loctite 4080) is part of the recently developed hybrid range by Loctite. This hybrid combines the advantages of a cyanoacrylate and an acrylic adhesive in a 1:1 ratio.
This highly innovative technology allows for permanent structural bonding with strong impact resistance (provided by the acrylic component) and rapid setting and strength increase (provided by the cyanoacrylate component).
As a result, durability is enhanced and adhesion is excellent on metals, plastics, composites, and more.
Loctite's innovation also lies in significantly reducing or eliminating the classic disadvantages associated with cyanoacrylates and acrylics.
Advantages of this new adhesive:
Low odor
The chemical hazard has been significantly reduced and is visibly indicated on the cartridges by the exclamation mark symbol, which means that repeated contact can lead to inflammatory reactions on skin or mucous membranes. All other chemical hazard pictograms such as “hazardous to the environment,” “hazardous to humans,” “flammable,” and “corrosive” are absent! This product presents a low risk to the user, which is a real asset in terms of hygiene, health, and safety.
Non-carcinogenic due to the absence of isocyanate.
Can fill gaps up to 5 mm.
Good peel and impact resistance, while maintaining significant shear strength, even up to 120°C.
Good elasticity. This adhesive is ideal for extreme conditions where vibrations and temperatures can be high.
This adhesive polymerizes at room temperature after mixing the two components, and the final viscosity is high, even thixotropic.
The setting and curing speeds of this product are similar to those of an instant adhesive and can be achieved even when there is a relatively large gap between the bonding pieces (up to 5 mm).
Another reference in the hybrid range is Loctite HY 4070, which is a cyanoacrylate in a 10:1 ratio. It shares many advantages, such as low odor and a focus on health, safety, and the environment. The key difference is the ultra-fast setting that ensures structural and durable bonding in record time! In contrast, the Loctite 4080 offers significantly superior impact resistance.
What are the applications of the hybrid 4080 adhesive?
Given the excellent adhesion of this product to various substrates, the possibilities for assembly are numerous, including the ability to freely combine different materials.
Some applications include:
A good choice for assembling components of products subjected to drop tests or impacts. It also offers good elasticity, which is important when assembling parts that experience relative movement. For example, it can be used for assembling a hammer made of a metal part and a nylon part.
Suitable for assemblies involving mixed substrates, particularly plastic molded parts or poorly fitting pieces subjected to impact loads, whether in semi-automatic or manual production. Typical applications can be found in the assembly of durable consumer goods, sports equipment, and electrical and lighting products.
Instructions for using Loctite 4080
For the 50 g cartridge, application is done using a specific EPX dual-component adhesive gun.
The usage is very simple! First, ensure that you have all the necessary accessories:
- First, the EPX gun
- Next, a 1:1 piston (the 2:1 is also acceptable)
- Finally, a mixing nozzle
For the 400 g cartridge, a pneumatic gun with a pressure of less than 2 bars is required.
